Twenty Bitter Truths of Life
What are the bitter truths of life that one should know?
1. In our feeble, human nature, we tend to destroy what we don’t understand, imagining it to be a threat, and preserve what we think is acceptable, only to discover later, that we were actually stupid.
2. The reason many love relationships fail is because we’ve made materialism more important, and everything else secondary. Consequently, we’re shocked when everything else fails and what we’re left with is only the bitter truth of chasing pretended fun.
3. Jealousy is a consequence of fear, that we’re unable to attain the level of success another person is perceived to have. The truth is that the other person is also jealous of your perceived simplicity and happiness.
4. Perception is deceptive because it’s the wrong picture people see of you. The truth is that what you’re afraid to reveal to the world, is actually what everybody else wants to see, but can’t.
5. Just like coins have two sides, everybody has two lives—the one they want everybody else to see, and the dark side they protect religiously.
6. Movie stars are the most miserable and unhappy people on earth, because they’re paid to pretend to be everyone else but themselves.
7. Before you wish to be like someone else, first consider the kind of price they’ve had to pay to get there. Some of them went hungry for days, and some had to endure great shame. Others have scars, and others endured pain, while others endured rape. Then go back and consider whether you want to pay that price.
8. Hopelessness is not a disease. It’s a state of mind that prevents us from observing the beauty on the other side—a high artificial wall on which we’ve spent much energy, time and effort, building on our own without external help.
9. The secret to success is to give gratitude for everything whether good or bad, for without gratitude you will never recognise success even when it comes knocking on your door.
10. Some people are miserable for losing a loved one. Others are miserable for being poor, others are miserable for being homeless, while others are miserable for being rich. Others are miserable for being jilted by a lover, while others are miserable for not getting noticed. Yet, others are miserable for being broke, while others are miserable for nothing.
11. Some things you have to fight for. Some things you have to let go. What’s yours will come back to you. What doesn’t come back to you didn’t belong to you in the first place. You should be grateful to heavens for good riddance.
12. When you give people something they want, money is always the inevitable reward. The problem is that most people are consumers and not suppliers. Then absurdly, you keep hearing people asking why they’re not rich.
13. The problem with life is that when it sucks, there’s always someone else enjoying it. Everything is so evenly distributed that we don’t have cause to remain happy all the time.
14. Sadly, money is everywhere and yet, the only way most people know how to get it is by getting a job. This is absurd, because everywhere you turn whether online or offline, there’s money. The problem is not because most people can’t see it, but because most people don’t want to look.
15. Your worst enemy will often be disguised as your best friend. They’ll wait for their best moment to pounce on you when you least expect. Ever wondered who is spreading that gossip about you? Think it’s your roommate from your sophomore year of college who dropped out and is now stripping in a Las Vegas club? No. It’s your best friend at work who thinks you should die so that he/she may get the much-coveted position.
16. There’s no “How To” book on life. Some of your friends are going to be doctors. Some engineers. Some teachers. Some professors and some will end up in jail. You cannot follow in anyone’s footsteps because you are not them and they are not you. You have to figure out what’s best for you on your own. Don’t do what your parents think it should be, or what your best friends think, but what your heart tells you.
17. The sad reality is that the brightest students in school are not likely to become the most successful people in real life. They are likely to become the most successful employees of the most successful people.
18. Academic education is only the first phase of education where other people guide you to pass exams. Life education is the second phase, where you’ll be lucky to get someone to guide you through the murky waters of life. The third phase is when you thought you knew something, but in reality, you knew nothing.
19. Do not look for a ton of friends, but instead, look for a few friends who are smarter than you, look like you, think better than you, are not afraid of hurting you by telling you the truth, and can come to your rescue when they sense that you’re going downhill.
20. In life, nobody cares about your dream, and why should they care anyway? Nobody sees life exactly as you do, and no one looks exactly like you or thinks like you. So, if you fail, remember that you can’t blame anyone but yourself. Success or failure are in your hands and no one owes you anything.
